A cursory survey taken the other day and showed the subject had showed disagreement to the area that has no munitions plants or even mineral deposits of any important Military value or strategic structures or walls.
ALL OF THE bRONX WOULD acquire by annexation woul be a number of city blocks and some were egven fashinable apartments that had frieght yards, a few stories long and 5 to 6 thousands new subjects.
mr Lyon's claim is both on legal grounds and the thesis that changed conditions.
Since Manhattans was so oversized it seperated the Bronx by the winding Spuyten Duyvil Creek, which connected Harlem to the Hudson River.
In 1903 the War Department wanted to destroy the creek filling diverting the waters into a new channelsouth or Marble hill leaving it isolated from Mahattan.

TQR-
I am studying the opposition of the residents of Marble Hill to be annexed to the Bronx during 1939 and 1940 because I want to prove that while Marble Hill is the connected to the Bronx, they did not want to pay extra taxes on the undeveloped borough.
Thesis statement
The residents of Marble Hill were better off staying with Manhattan than being annexed to the Bronx because they want to avoid paying extra taxes for this undeveloped borough.
On March 12,1939, the New York Times included an image of James J. Lyons, the borough president of the Bronx, and Joseph Fitzgerald, a member of Lyons's office, planting the United States and the Bronx flags on the highest point of Marble Hill, a neighborhood in Manhattan that Lyons claimed was part of the Bronx.["Marble Hill Area Annexed to Bronx"March 12,1939] In the article, Mr. Lyons, the professed "Bronx fuehrer" was compared to Aldof Hitler when he invaded the Sudetenland. Why was Lyons compared to Hitler? How did the residents of Marble Hill feel about this situation and what was there opinions on Mr. Lyons? The residents of Marble Hill were better off staying with Manhattan than being annexed to the Bronx because they want to avoid paying extra taxes for this undeveloped borough.
Spuyten Dutvil was a creek that paced through Marble Hill seperating it from the Bronx, but as soon as Spuyten Dutvil was covered up, Lyons noticed how close Marble Hill is to the Bronx so he decided to claim it.In 1903, the War department destroyed Spuyten Dutvil creek to create two diverting waters creating a new channel south.["Rectifying His Frontier"March 12,1939] Without Spuyten Dutvil Marble Hill looked a part of the Bronx instead of Manhattan, which brought the light bulb to Lyons head in annexing Marble Hill to the Bronx, Stanely Isaacs which was the borough president of Manhattan did not like the idea of Lyons taking over Marble Hill but he wanted the people to voice their opinion. Surely enough Isaacs stated on March 10,1939 in the New York Times, "that no one would leave Manhattan for the Bronx".["Marble Hill Boos Bronx Anschuluss"March 10,1939]
Lyons the "Bronx fueher" was compared to Aldof Hitler because he at once stated Marble Hill was the second Bronx without any one voicing their opinion of his idea. Lyons was compared to Hitler because when Hiltler invaded Sudetenland taking control of the land without caring for what the people want, Lyons seemed as if he did not care for what the people wanted either. Lyons just claimed that Marble Hill was a part of the Bronx because it shared land with the Bronx which many people thought it already was a part of the Bronx, ever since Spuyten Dutvil was covered up.People compared Sudetenland to Marble Hill was a land taken by a fueher known as Aldof Hitler who invaded the land, this situation was compared to Lyons situation when he came to Marble Hill and planted two flags in the highest point of the land and claimed it belonged to the the Bronx. There was no way Marble Hill was going to let that happen because just because they shared land with the Bronx it doesn't mean anything they are a part of Manhattan politically.
Lyons wanted Marble Hill just to be annexed to the The Bronx just as badly Marble Hill residents didn't want to be a part of the Bronx. Lyons thought if Marble Hill was apart of the Bronx it would help there community by adding parks and extra taxes to help around the borough to make it a better place to live. But most of the residents disagreed and thought that would be waste of money because why would they switch to a borough that is need instead of staying apart of a well developed borough. Lyons just wanted Marble Hill for the extra taxes they would bring. On May 20, Thirteen property owners in Marble Hill paid realstate tax from the Bronx because it was cheaper than Manhattans, which made Lyons prove that being a part of the Bronx you would have those benefits. ["Marble Hill Faces New Lyon threat" May 20, 1939] The Residents Marble Hill did not care it was only for realstate but for the other taxes would most likely be raised.
On March 10, in New York Times an article stated different opinions of Marble Hill residents about being annexed to the Bronx, majority of Marble Hillers did not want to be any part of the Bronx many opinions were stated and heard. Many Marble Hillers voiced there opinions about the Bronx and being a neighborhood in Manhattan and what it meant to them being in the Bronx Borough or not. Mrs. J.E. Tierney a resident of Marble Hill quoted " It really doesn't make any difference, Everybody thinks Marble Hill is part of the Bronx anyway and if the Bronx can give my son a park to play than I wouldn't mind being a part of the Bronx".[ "Marble Hill Boos Bronx Anschuluss"March 10,1939] But there were still people who disagreed and did not want to be annexed to the Bronx for instance, Daniel F. Kennedy quoted, "Why should we be apart of the Bronx ?, In the first place taxes would be raised because the borough is not built up, and we would have to pay for what the other fellow gets, there hasn't any life in the Bronx".[ "Marble Hill Boos Bronx Anschuluss"March 10, 1939] "There hasn't any life in the Bronx" means there isn't anything to do in the Bronx most of it is still undeveloped farm land anyways. On December 9, in a New York Times article Lyons the borough president of the Bronx took down the flag of the Bronx and the United states from the highest point of Marble Hill.["Lyons Renounces Anschluss Plan" December 9, 1939]
The residents of Marble Hill were better off staying with Manhattan than being annexed to the Bronx because they want to avoid paying extra taxes for this undeveloped borough. Marble Hill residents proved their point being a part of the Bronx was not an option, they went through so much to be where they are now. Marble Hillers did not respect Lyons or his ideas they knew being annexed to the Bronx was going to boring and expensive because taxes would be raised. Even though some people thought being a part of wouldn't make a difference, why would anyone want to pay taxes for a undeveloped borough?, meanwhile the borough they live in now perfectly is stabled and well developed. Marble Hill now has parks and a little shopping center for people to enjoy so now I think Lyons would be surprised and really regret all the time and effort he put in trying to annex Marble Hill to the Bronx.
